Android updates: Google still picks it up, far behind Apple and its iOS

in early January, Google announced that Android 7.0 Nougat was present 0.7% of smartphones and tablets on my OS while iOS 10 team now 76% of mobile devices from Apple. He thus enjoys a rate of adoption 100 times higher than that of my rival. How is it possible to such a discrepancy? Is the fragmentation of Android really the only factor?

Android, a fragmented ultra bone

nearly five months after its release, the rate of adoption of Android Nougat is still below 1% and the version of the OS that dominates the market is nothing more than Android Lollipop, which took more than two years to invite themselves over 33.4% of the Park. It is two times less than 10 iOS four months after its release. At this level, the two bones are of course by comparable because if Apple controls both the hardware and software of its smartphones part, Google does control both on its own aircraft.

Android fragmentation

This fragmentation is so attributable, in large part, to the huge variety of smartphones and tablets under the Google OS, but not only because if manufacturers were properly doing their job, they wouldn’t be there. How to explain that in February, 2017, one third of smartphones turn under a version of the OS as old as an antique or two years as Android 2.3 Gingerbread released in December 2010 is still present in the ranking and, worse still, has a higher than Nougat adoption rate?

The factors of this fragmentation are multiple but we can already and already cite the lack of responsiveness of the builders. In recent days, three major manufacturers have interrupted the Nougat updated on at least a high-end device: Sony on its Xperia Z5 and Z5 Premium, Samsung on its Galaxy S7 and HTC on my HTC 10, each time because of technical problems. This means that not only these updates arrive late, but increasingly, they are riddled with bugs.

Also the problem remains of low-end mobiles with which one can be lucky if one gets not even an update.

a software support two times longer at Apple than Google

in earlier this week, Google announced end of support software of the Nexus 6 and 9 . Both devices will still receive the latest security updates, but they will not have access to Android 7.1.2 or later versions. Their software support ends after two years and four months. Attention, it is the best case. No Android smartphone can boast of having endured more than two years and a few months.

We’ll here abstraction of third-party manufacturers to speak only of Google products, in this case the Nexus and the Pixel.

Every Google product gets two versions of Android in addition to that under which it was delivered, which therefore guarantees Office two years of software support which in addition to the possible corrective updates and monthly security patches, which brings us around to two years and a half to see three years in the best of cases with all the same a small exception to the Galaxy Nexus which has never been entitled to Android KitKat its processor TI OMAP 4460 does not support this version.

It’s all well and good but these two and a half years of software support, however, have to smile any iOS user. 10 iOS update was deployed in September 2016 on the last five generations of iPhone, which means that even the iPhone 5 released in 2012 were right. By comparison, the software support of the Nexus 4 released the same year stopped at Android Lollipop.

The phone to however received its last update in October 2015 but was entitled to a new version of Android since Lollipop. He will be so entitled to three major versions of its OS against five for iPhone 5 out 6 and currently under 10.2.1 Ditto iOS IOS to iOS 9 released in September 2015 and distributed on old devices such as the iPhone 4S released in 2011

Finally, who practices the most planned obsolescence?

If one looks only at the duration of software support, one could easily conclude that Google practice planned obsolescence more than my rival, but things are far from simple. While it is true that Apple is updating its aircraft longer, legal action was launched however against Apple late 2015. Apple has indeed accused of planned when released iOS obsolescence 9 . How can knowing that even the iPhone 4s were right?

Simply because the update has slowed the performance of the device that it became unusable. A class action that was also not unprecedented because the same complaint had already been done to Apple in 2011 following the release of iOS 4 on iPhone 3 G and more recently, users accused Apple to have killed the autonomy of their iPhone with iOS 10.1.1 update .

Finally, is it better to have constantly the last version of the software or as fast as in its infancy smartphone?

Apple and Samsung are the two great champions of planned obsolescence
