What is the role of energy in the universe of Android?

in our modern society, energy is the epicenter of a multitude of socio-economic debates. Technology is obviously at the forefront as energy is the basis of all current electronic devices. Let’s look at this still too little known topic and let’s look at the links he may have with our Android universe.

little background on energy

we can find on the internet the following definition:

in the physical sense, energy is the ability to change a State, to produce a leading work of the movement, light, or heat.

There are different energies, some are specific and others are less because they leave an impact or simply waste on the environment. Nuclear energy, for example, is not clean energy while hydropower is one of the best alternatives in the field (always in terms of cleanliness, not practicality or efficacy). It is therefore in the interest of everybody to choose the best value for clean energy in order to limit the risks for themselves, for others and for the planet. The problem is that energy such as nuclear power have some advantages which are sometimes preferred to their disadvantages.

For us, fans of technology, energy is obviously a key element since it allows us to use our devices and, indirectly, very many services such as the cloud that is itself powered by machines that need energy, etc.

the classification of Greenpeace

production of the smartphone to its use, the need for energy is essential. Today, many technology companies are banking on renewable energy offers various other environmental benefits, but they are not all at the same level. Greepeace leaned on the issue and has created its own rankings in order to present the best students.

In the lead, we find… Apple. Greenpeace assigns an A (maximum score). In second place we find Facebook that gets him as one guy even followed by Google which has the same notes. In fourth position we find Salesforce who succeeded at Microsoft and Adobe, all three having a B. Apple, Google and Facebook can be criticized on many subjects but not in terms of renewable energy, this is the third year that the firm to the Apple maintains its first place.

Greenpeace divides consumers of energy technology in four elements: devices, networks, data centers and manufacturing. In 2012, consumption of devices accounted for 47%, i.e. almost half but this figure has declined to 34 percent in 2017. From the data center, on the other hand, we can see an improvement (15% in 2012 she rose to 21%). The networks also see a change (passage from 20% in 2012 to 29 percent). Manufacturing, it, slightly down from 18% to 16% despite the number of sold devices (and the appearance of the Indian market, among others).

what is important for the end user?

When you use your smartphone, you send and receive data. Many devices are included in your data transfers, so in fact the use of your smartphone (or Tablet) has broader effects than you imagine.

You will be really surprised to learn that the more intensive uses in energy are streaming and social networking. These systems becoming more and more popular, usage continues to increase, and therefore consumption is also increasing. Greepeace uses the term “real-time entertainment”, IE the entertainment at the time real (in the broad sense of the term), to describe this type of use. It indicates that in the best of circumstances, this entertainment sector represents nearly half of the total use of the Internet in Europe. Streaming video is, of course, the most important element, with for example the now famous Netflix.

According to you, are the actors of Android sufficiently concerned about the environment? What should do to improve the situation?
