Disque dur 375Go que j'ai reçu pour ces tests

WD graciously sent me a hard drive of this new generation to test the possibilities it offers, where the article indication sponsored above.

new generation of drives WDLabs

our solution WD PiDrive, which is in its third generation, has evolved in the same way that computers, moved over time to the point of a flexible disk hosting the system to that of a flexible disk associated with a hard drive that stores the operating system and applications.» Thus, we have grouped our SD card and USB drive technology for a more efficient solution, since each component system will benefit from their power”, explains Dave Chew, Chief Engineer at WDLabs. “The arrival of this new solution is comparable to that of the hard drive on the market, which has sounded the end of the floppy to insert and remove computers .

Carton contenant le disque dur WDLabs

this is in a strong cardboard box classic hard drive WDLabs is delivered. Well protected in the packet that has arrived, the box has suffered no damage during transport. Boîte ouverte, le contenu est partiellement sorti de l'emballage

the content out like a drawer. Protection (in black on the picture) is at the center of which the hard drive is perfectly protected. The cable housed in a plastic sleeve is housed in one of the sides of the protection. On the top we see the documentation after which is stapled a bag closed with a zip containing the supplied microSD card.

save the SD card!

The Council of the guy who has already made several times: before doing anything with the micro SD card, I highly recommend you to make a copy of the card on a hard drive… Just okazou 🙂

Le matériel sorti de la boîte : Le dsique dur dans sa protection anti choc, la documentation avec la carte micro SD

now it’s all out of the box. You find on the left the hard disk anti-shock protection. You can see the disc protected by its antistatic bag. Right documentation with the micro SD card which is appended.

Le disque dur dans sa pochette antistatique et le câble de connexion dans son sachet. this time it all came out. The cable will be used to connect the hard drive to the Raspberry Pi consists of 3 wires connected to the USB port on the hard drive.

static = DANGER

when you extract the hard drive from its anti-static case watch. Like all the recent electronics it components SENSITIVE to static electricity. Why do you think that the manufacturers deliver their products in a special bag? To look pretty? Avoid to manipulate the disk without need, do not put your hands full of fingers on the printed circuit board tracks visible under the disc…

come on it is ready for connection.

Extrémité du disque dur. On voit le connecteur qui va recevoir la prise (alimentation et USB) on this disk image hard, we see on the left the LED1 which will indicate the access to the hard drive. We’ll talk a little further…

Disque dur avec le cordon connecté

the USB plug with 3-wire is connected to the hard drive. Well find the sense of connection, is asymmetrical. The power input, making the leftmost is detailed below.

Disque dur WDLabs : la prise d'alimentation PWR est une micro USB sur laquelle vient se brancher l'alimentation du Raspberry Pi.

the power supply of the drive is a USB microphone that will receive taking formerly connected to the Raspberry Pi. The diagram below shows all of the links to be established.

Schéma de branchement global du disque dur sur le Raspberry Pi the USB 3 will be connected to one of the USB ports on the Raspberry Pi, making 4 connects into the power of the Raspberry Pi USB microphone. Taking 5 will receive the micro USB plug which was previously connected to the power supply of the Raspberry Pi.

WDLabs advocates a diet of 3A, I made tests with official power 2.5 A Raspberry Pi without encountering any problems. Everything worked normally.

connect all the cables EXCEPT the power supply that you don’t plug not on hold PWR of the hard drive at the moment. Insert the micro SD card into the connector of the Raspberry Pi card. Also connect the HDMI cable to the screen and finally an Ethernet cable as the NOOBS system will recover the OS on the Internet.

écran de démarrage de NOOBS

NOOBS allows to choose the system to install, it is also multiboot. See you to articles on NOOBS for its operation.

sorry for the quality of the photo, I could not connect to this version of NOOBS with Remote Desktop connection and I had to take a picture of the screen 🙁

check the system you want to install. Raspbian [RECOMMANDED] in graphical mode is first in the list (it is the one that I checked). You can choose to create an ext4 partition that can be shared between different OS second line of the display).

Project Space install Raspbian Lite in a score of limited size. Very convenient for testing.

Raspbian Lite installs this OS (Raspbian version text only) in a partition occupying all the space available on the disk.

LibreELEC and OSMC are built multimedia centers all about Kodi .

Lakka is a retro console. I here pause about LAKKA: I’m not a gambler. I do not practice game consoles or the retrogaming. This being said, you will understand that I am a beginner in this area. I find myself with a retro console but… I know not to use it. I connected a XBox 360 joystick used on the PC by my grandchildren. It is well recognized, it lights up, it allows me to navigate the menus… but after? I do not know throw the emulators (apparently you must install the BIOS) or start games (apparently we need to get Roma)… I tried to see how it works to retrieve a kind Flight Simulator on the Atari game. I’m came across a site of m… that forces me to watch a video ad before each download 🙁 I finally gave up.

as I often suggest in the comments I have RTFM LAKKA http://www.lakka.tv/doc/Home/ doc but… If you don’t know how it works, there is not info to start (menus, or you need to install the Roma, the bios…)

I call

If you know LAKKA and can help me let me know! Once again (and this is not the first time) the Foundation integrates a software (or system) without really informing users of its use. I’m not bad with the Raspberry Pi (if if 🙂) but here we are in another area and I do not know how…

Vue du disque WDLabs en fonctionnement. Une LED bleue indique l'accès au disque started, installation, start the HDD took place without needing to do anything.

once the inserted into the Raspberry Pi microSD card, it starts taking into account the hard drive connected to its USB port.

the user has no intervention to do, everything is ready in the system provided by WDLABS.

after several days of operation 24/24 there is no note on the use of the Raspberry Pi 3 on which I have connected the FT Drive.

Oh if! the super blue LED that is a little too powerful in my opinion 🙂 that illuminates the entire room evening…

I conducted the complete update of Raspbian, starts are fast, NOOBS allows to choose the system on which the Raspberry Pi starts…

La LED bleue du disque dur WDLabs produit une lumière intense.

I discovered on the occasion of the writing of this article the other products created by WDLabs and which are presented on this page .

WD PiDrive Node Zero

WD PiDrive Node Zero is un compact package that includes a PiDrive connected to a Raspberry Pi Zero via a card adapter with 2 USB ports. It is a system of affordable storage and low power with embedded computation capabilities.

it is ideal for video recording, recording data, offline analysis and applications that need stand-alone operation due to the limitations of the network or the restrictions of confidentiality / security. “

card adapter WD 2.5″ SATA for the Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi adapter card allows to connect any external hard drive SATA 2, 5″ to a COMPUTE MODULE Raspberry Pi. With this adapter card, it is possible to easily increase the storage space.

WD PiDrive Compute Centre

this complete kit of computer has a Raspberry Pi 3 and a WD PiDrive Foundation Edition 375 GB. It comes with the Raspberry Pi, a WD PiDrive, a micro SD with NOOBS Foundation Edition pre-loaded software, 6″x 6″ square box, a keyboard and a wireless mouse, a power supply and a cable.

with this new range WDLabs offers several sizes of disks and a USB key (above) operating on the same principle. (64 GB, 375Go, 1 TB)

implementation is truly “plug and play” type and is limited to the connection of the disk, the insertion of the micro SD card and that’s all

it will take to document you a bit on NOOBS if you do not know the operation of this system, really accessible for beginners.

systematically plan a box to install and protect the disk, use “outdoors” is too risky given the presence of the printed circuit board.

except the blue a little too “flashy” LED to my taste, it’s a hard drive that is very interesting to easily increase the storage capacity. I think this one will join my Pi-TopCEED to provide access to different systems, store videos…
