Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: which one to buy for Christmas?

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: design and finish

at the level of the appearance, we have the same school, namely metal and glass. Even though almost a year between the output of the two smartphones (the Galaxy A5 2016 was launched in January while the Honor 8 came out in September), the Samsung smartphone keeps still look great. However, we must recognize that the phone looks less premium than the Honor 8.

The Galaxy A5 may have a metal frame and a comparable to the glass back Galaxy S6 , the finishes are not as good as on the Honor 8. The grip of the latter turns more pleasant and smoother with fewer sharp edges. The other side of the coin is that Honor 8 nevertheless is more slippery and therefore more sensitive to the falls. And like any smartphone in glass, these can be fatal, and this despite the presence of a Gorilla Glass 4 glass.

another notable difference between the two devices, the location of the fingerprint reader. The Galaxy A5 (2016) positions it on the front on the button Home while Honor 8 places on the back. Personally, the two positions don’t bother me but some users have a greater preference. The only thing to remember is that Honor 8 player turns out to be faster.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: quality screen

our two fighters of the day have the same screen diagonal: 5.2 inches. It is also interesting to say that smartphones have the same Full-HD definition but also the same density of pixels (424 ppp).

the only difference here is in the display technology used by the two brands. In my usual, Samsung opted for a Super AMOLED screen on your smartphone while Honor sports a LTPS TFT – LCD display. In both cases, the color reproduction is satisfactory. The sharpness and clarity of the images are also very correct. No complaints on either the rate of responsiveness of the touchscreen. However, there is a net benefit to the Galaxy A5. Blacks are deeper. Colorimetry is close to perfection. The reflections invite very little and Galaxy A5 has nothing to envy to a Galaxy S6, which was up to little one of the references of the market.

Reason for consolation to Honor 8, its screen boasts a ‘Protection of the eyes’ mode which gives the screen a shade slightly yellowish. Certainly I repeat myself with other items but this mode is particularly addictive and enjoyable bedtime or when your eyes get tired.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: software interface

here again, the similarities are many. We find so on both phones Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow (the A5 had been launched under Lollipop but received the Marshmallow update this summer). Two manufacturers like bring their customization layer: TouchWiz for Samsung and EMUI for Honor. In both cases, the differences are with pure Android. EMUI is more similar to iOS and ToucWiz focuses on the blue color. We like it or not. It’s a matter of taste. The positive point is that the two manufacturers are more and more efforts to simplify their interface and correct their mistakes.

You should also know that Honor 8 will soon receive Android Nougat, the latest version of Android to be launched at the end of August. In the program, EMUI in a new version 5.0 with the appearance of a drawer of applications by default. For the A5 Galaxy (2016), the update seems more complicated, and if it happens it will have to be very patient.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: performance

two philosophies clash. Samsung targets mid-range with Galaxy A5 (2016). It does not therefore seek pure performance, this area reserved for its flagship, the Galaxy S7 . It is the opposite of the Honor 8 aimed to hunt on the lands of the high-end.

The two manufacturers may improve, I’ve always had with TouchWiz and EMUI

the A5 take so a processor aging Exynos 7580, octocore still, operating at a frequency of 1.6 GHz and 2 GB of RAM. Test AnTuTu (v6.0.1), it reached a total of 40931 points, which puts a little behind the 7 Honor, the ancestor of the Honor 8, which made 45000 points. Daily, for a regular user, it is more than enough but the players or greedy people multitasking will meet some problems with longer loading times.

the Honor 8 is doing better at games and more powerful level

the Honor 8 shows so much more powerful. Under the hood, there is the processor octocore Kirin 950 (4 core Cortex-A72 clocked at 2.3 GHz, 4 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz Cortex-A53) with 4 GB of RAM. Its very good management of the RAM allows him to launch a large number of applications. Honor 8 is doing very well at the level of the games. In short, the Honor 8 is a treat to use with a very fluid interface. Evolution compared to the previous model is notable. Therefore, if you are looking for a powerful and high-performance model, the Honor 8 suits you more.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: camera

in technical terms, the Galaxy A5 (2016) has a main camera 13 megapixels at 4:3 or 10 megapixels in 16:9 with Aperture f/1, 9. Honor 8 offers him a double 12 megapixel camera (the same as the Huawei P9 ), one of the sensors travaillantt exclusively in black and white.

in practice, the camera of the A5 is faster than the Honor 8. It is also best in strong light conditions, but it stops there. Honor 8 is more powerful and is richer in details. Paradoxically, we were able to wait a little longer to Honor 8 in low light thanks to the sensor black and white, but this is not the case. The camera for selfies is also better. Finally, the application of the camera turns out to be more complete with a manual provided on the Honor 8.

In video, the A5 (2016) do not film 4 k and tops out at Full HD 1080 p at 60 fps. Just like the Honor 8.

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: battery –

look no further. In this field, the Galaxy A5 (2016) beats trouncing my rival of the day. The autonomy of the A5 2016 turns simply excellent with easily two days of battery life under conditions of intensive use. It’s a day better than Honor 8. The Samsung smartphone benefits from rapid charge which allows him to recharge completely in barely an hour or 30 minutes better than the phone of Honor. If you are looking for a tough smartphone, the Galaxy A5 (2016) is ideal

Samsung Galaxy A5 (2016) vs Honor 8: conclusion

at the time of the review, my preference turns to Honor 8. Despite the qualities of endurance of the smartphone from Samsung, Honor phone is larger, prettier, but especially more versatile than my rival. Honor 8 benefits in addition to the attentions of the manufacturer since it is my flagship and is guaranteed to receive Android Nougat. Finally, only the additional cost (fifty euros on average) of Honor 8 may make you change your mind about the Galaxy A5 (2016), which is in any case a great mid-range smartphone.
