FT-TopCeed: a desktop computer with a Raspberry Pi

Photo de l'ordinateur de bureau Pi-TopCEED à base de Raspberry Pi it’s been a while that FT – Top had sent me this PC, but with the release of the book I had not had too much time to handle.
It is now made. After have presented you Pi portable – TOp made from Raspberry Pi , here Pi-TopCeed the Raspberry Pi-based desktop PC.
It is distributed in France by Kubii and my editing, compared to is the phone to ease.

the parcel

I wouldn’t take a photo of the package itself but he was impressive, with several layers of bubble plastic and a layer of sturdy adhesive. On this side there nothing to say. Once the Cocoon is gently removed, this is what I found:

the inside of the cardboard

one does not account on the image but the cardboard measures 36 x 36 x 7 cm. It is extremely rigid and protects the content well. It drags outside which is only a blindfold, to access the carton itself. The inside of the lid is topped with a layer of foam to cushion and protect the screen. It seems effective 🙂. The lid lifts easily and…

pitopceed_03 you can directly access the Pi-TopCeed. The upper part is a 14-inch diagonal screen (will I help you 14 x 2.5 = 35 cm) and the lower part is the cover that protects the “motherboard”.

the green card has a detachable part (right) which is a memory aid for GPIO, to insert on the GPIO based on the Pi – Top type you ordered.

are going to get the toy from its box…

adjustable crutch

the back of Pi – Top has an adjustable metal stand ( and strong ) which will allow to stabilize the computer and give it the desired tilt.

instruction manual

pitopceed_05 we find inside the box the Assembly instructions ( Instruction Manual ) in English… but the designs speak for themselves. Unfolded once the manual looks after the place 🙂 the more observant will have noticed that the photographer appears in reflection on the screen 😉

inside of the package, well protected by a pressed paper hull ( it looks like the box of egg carton but white ) we discover the power supply with a plug on the french format ( phew 🙂). There is also the SD card and the feet of the Raspberry Pi but we’ll be back.

pitopceed_14 food made in China ( you guessed ) fate on a jack plug. It is equipped with a flexible cable but good (4 mm) diameter.

food suitable for a range between 100 and 240v, with a frequency of 50 to 60 Hz. suffice to say that it is universal and that the only change to do to adapt is to change the plug 🙂

its release you find a voltage of 18 v and it may issue 1 has. Makes 18 watts that will be adapted to the Raspberry Pi which is supplied with 5V.

SD card and feet magnetized

pitopceed_09 already highest overview, the card micro SD with the registered on Pi – Top system. I advise you prior to use to make a copy on your hard drive ( okazou ).  Using win32DiskImager under Windows or Linux dd. The card comes with an adapter to the SD format that will be convenient if want to create a map on a laptop with a SD slot only.

around card are the feet that will fix the Raspberry Pi to the box. No screw or spacer, just a foot with a tip that goes to clip in the hole of the Raspberry Pi. To be clipped, it is clipped. Must be pressed really hard. I even had a little afraid to damage the circuit board so I had to support. Bin so I don’t rush these things, I’m always afraid to spoil something with my big hands full of fingers 😉

mounting feet on the Raspberry Pi 3

to equip my Pi-TopCeed I chose a Raspberry 3 Pi… For that matter!

pitopceed_18 insert the point of a foot in a hole of the Raspberry Pi. Going to need a little force to get it and it is clipped!

pitopceed_21 the foot is equipped with a powerful magnet that will serve to maintain ( very strongly ) the Raspberry Pi on the mounting bars.

pitopceed_20 I admit that initially I was a little skeptical before this means of fixation. But after a few days of use nothing to report, the Raspberry Pi is well maintained by her loving feet. Magnets have made huge progress ( Finally, those who manufacture the magnets ) and they perform this function without problem despite their small size.

implement the Raspberry Pi. Attention both feet located towards taking USB and Ethernet must be fixed on the isolated metal squares ( we see one above to the right of the HDMI ), so that the feet side DSI port ( who is to us in the picture below ) will be pasted on the metal bar.

while you’re there, you can plug the HDMI which takes the image to the management of the display card.

pitopceed_19 on the laptop computer version of Pi – Top I found Raspberry Pi was too much compared to the holes of the case ( because of the GPIO cable too short ), here the adaptation is perfect and the USB and Ethernet are perfectly accessible from the outside.

pitopceed_26 is it not beautiful?

pitopceed_28 so I took the opportunity to connect the Unifying key that I use with keyboard and wireless mouse.

and the GPIO?

pitopceed_11 to the left of Pi-TopCeed, we find the map of ‘service ‘. It has the switching power supply to feed the Raspberry Pi and attack the LCD from the HDMI signals. We also see a connector to the right of the map ( who has a pack of black wires ).

pitopceed_15 here… You can see it better? below the map there is a female connector ( the same as on the Pi – Top cell phone ) which will receive prototype expansion card and/or speakers. Talk later…

pitopceed_23 on the side of Raspberry Pi you can now connect the GPIO connector. Make sure not to shift it, which could be fatal 🙁

screen Protection

pitopceed_25 you can now detach the protective film from the screen.

Go, go, go!

pitopceed_07 this time we will turn it on.

already locate the button A/M. do look no one any push button which would exceed the chassis. Here the button is simply cut in the plastic of the hull ( not beast). So when you press the circle, he sinks and…

pitopceed_08 behind the scenes button just press a switch ( button). The card is made in such a way that during a press of the button, it starts and feeds the Raspberry Pi.

this is seen looking at the power supply.

connect power

pitopceed_12 power is accessible through a hole between the A/M button and adjustable foot.

pitopceed_06 insert the connector of the power supply. Plug in the sector. A blue glow ( a little strong for my taste ) filled the room. The IP TopCeed is powered.

press the A/M a second.

pitopceed_34 located behind the A/M button LED lights ( above )

and card supplies the Raspberry Pi

pitopceed_23 which starts!

pitopceed_29 a sequence of screens allows you to configure IP-TopCeed…

pitopceed_27 well, then I take that? Oops

pitopceed_30 the WiFi Config no problem ([1945(9007] think it’s QWERTY 😀)

pitopceed_31 Nice visible screen quality. Given the time of crap November we have, I have not tested in full sun 😀 but it looks bright and of good quality.

pitopceed_32 in the Pi – Top OS a number of things are planned.

with this OS the power supply card is handled intelligently: you press that feeds the RasPi. You do SHUTDOWN on the RasPi map will turn off the power. You hold the button down for several seconds, the power is off “savagely.”

to me is not that I don’t like the Pi – Top OS but I prefer to install a version of Raspbian. So, I hope to be able to add these options in a normal Raspbian. I found a few online solutions but… ‘it doesn’t’ 🙂

I keep testing and I will do an article when everything is operational.

pitopceed_33 once the back protection plate, you get a PC quite worthy to appear on an office geek ( or not geek also ).

the brightness of the screen is adjustable with Pi – Top OS.

map prototype

pitopceed_35 Pi – top offers accessories for its line of computers to Raspberry Pi database. The prototype card plugs into the connector located under the map of ‘service’ that happens… the GPIO cable connected between the Raspberry Pi GPIO and map of ‘service ‘.

GPIO ports are present on pellets solder. So, you can develop the interfaces you need. A classic connector will allow you to plug HAT cards for testing.

found a female connector to the right of the map, which can thus be ‘chainer’ to other modules.

for watching videos, missing just one thing, the speakers. When the article on Pi – Top laptop, I asked the question to Pi – Top who told me to prepare for their products quality speakers.

pitopceed_39 it is made with the speaker coming to connect on the expansion of the service card port. It also contains a socket to connect another module ( another speaker for stereo, map prototype…) ) to its right.

the speaker uses the HDMI digital sound, which is provided on the PIN SPDIF map of ‘service ‘.

A inside the case of the speaker, there is a excellent audio receiver DIR9001 , which converts the digital signal, then a amplifier class D TAS2505 amplifies the signal. This amplifier has a volume control via the Raspberry Pi I2C bus.
A software must be installed on the Raspberry Pi to route the sound to the HDMI channel and to send the configuration and manage the volume.
I2C connector pins 40 the Raspberry Pi GPIO pins must be connected to the pins of the service card, either by using the 40 pin cable or wiring of the necessary with the wires.

pi-topceed_complet all looks not bad…

I had enjoyed the portable version of Pi – Top

P1020364 this version equipped with a battery offers interesting autonomy with a Pi3, only on the battery.

Ave the Pi-TopCeed is a desktop machine that Pi – Top offers. You can find 159.90 Euro at Kubii . If you add a Raspberry Pi 3 makes a machine to 200 euros, practice, because one piece and easily transportable

the Pi-TopCeed is available in grey and green. My taste of the fluorescent colors made me choose green for my two Pi – Top 🙂

the glare of 14-inch screen has a resolution of 1366 × 768 and consumes only 2, 6W.

when I get the speakers and card proto, I also certainly advanced on the adaptation of the functions of Pi – Top OS on Raspbian… This will be another article 😉

I leave the final word to Eben UPTON:
I would like to see a Pi – Top Ceed in all classes
