Raspberry Pi 3 can be immediately via USB and Ethernet boot [Exclusive Guide]

I have actually a break , but this is simply too interesting for owners of Raspberry Pi. Gordon Hollingworth currently experimenting with new boot options. There are beta versions of bootloaders, what a Raspberry Pi can boot via 3 USB Mass Storage or Ethernet.

Raspberry Pi 3 launch via USB

When publishing the Rasberry Pi 3 has already been announced that there will be several new boot options. One of them is USB Mass Storage Boot Mode . The developer explicitly point out that these options are still in a beta phase. Who therefore does not feel quite sure who was waiting for the final version.

The USB mass storage devices actually include all storage devices that can be insert into the USB port. This may be completely normal USB sticks but also USB hard drives.

Now, however, start some flash devices to slow. The same is true for hard disks and the system runs in a timeout, which is currently set to two seconds. It is possible to increase the time to five seconds, but for some equipment that’s not enough also. Subsequent devices have been tested and work perfectly:

  • Sandisk Cruzer Fit 16GB

  • Sandisk Cruzer Blade 16Gb

  • Samsung 32GB USB 3.0 drive

  • MeCo 16GB USB 3.0

For more information, a little technical, there are in official announcement . Who plays with the USB-boot mode and a device is as well, may gladly let the developers know in the comments. In the documentation is described in detail , how can you start your 3 Raspberry Pi via USB mass storage.

Raspberry Pi 3 boot via Ethernet

Also in a beta version, the boot option via Ethernet. In order for the Raspberry Pi can start 3 over the network. A big advantage of this method is that you can thus operate a complete headless Pi (without monitor), in which you have not even go-out for the update of the operating system. A power supply that can be controlled externally, would of course be good. Otherwise, that is with a reboot tricky a bit.

The developers point out some bugs, which they wish to devote yet. The bugs depend primarily with DHCP together, or with the switch used. So you have to have or find that works smoothly with the boot system of Raspberry Pi a switch. The developers state that the thing worked without problems with a Netgear GS108.

Like when booting via USB booting via network does not work with Pi 1, Pi B +, P 2 and P Zero, but only with the Raspberry Pi 3.

There are, however, a special mode in which a bootcode.bin can be copied to the SD card, what a start is attempted over the network. For that you need though an SD card, but that is not very loaded – it’s just a workaround that may incidentally bypass the above described bugs in Pi. 3 This method works well only when Raspberry Pi 1 not, at B + and Pi 2 already.

Again, there is a official announcement with further technical details and a detailed description of documentation .
