Convert a hard disk MBR to GPT on Windows 10, 8 and 7

Convert a hard disk MBR to GPT is useful in more ways than one. The use of GPT partition table on a hard drive already used to override the limitations (now disabling) of the MBR 128 partitions instead up to 4 partitions and 256 TB per partition instead of 2.2TB (200GB 2). GPT is also essential if you want install the UEFI version of Windows 7, 8 or 10 : UEFI indeed requires a hard drive uses the GPT partition table rather than the traditional MBR. To take advantage of these opportunities, we will have convert MBR disk to GPT . Luckily, this is the purpose of this tutorial 😉

So far, the main problem arose when we wanted convert a hard disk MBR to GPT is that your hard drive must be empty, without partitions. It was impossible to do the conversion without losing all its data . But that was before ! Recently, I discovered a solution to convert a hard disk MBR to GPT without losing data using gptgen 🙂

In this tutorial, so I’ll show you two ways to convert MBR disk to GPT : one with data loss by using Diskpart and one without data loss using Gptgen . Whichever method you choose, I strongly recommend make a backup of your documents : copy personal documents to external media or create a system image of your hard drive (= picture system image with Windows and all your documents).

Before continuing, you must open the command prompt . If you want to convert your main hard drive, you need to open the command prompt from the Advanced Boot Options or from the Windows Installer. To learn how, follow this tutorial: Open the command prompt on Windows 10, 8 and 7

Convert MBR to GPT Diskpart with

Using Diskpart, all HDD data will be deleted . Consider making a backup of your documents!

In the Windows command prompt, enter the following commands:

  diskpart
list disk (note the disk number you want to delete)
select disk X (replace X with the disk number that you noted earlier)
detail disk (displays the information on your hard drive, to be sure not to go wrong)
clean
convert gpt
exit

Restart your PC for Windows to take account of the changes. If you converted your primary hard drive to install Windows 10, 8 or 7, you can continue following this tutorial: to install the UEFI version of Windows 7, 8 or 10

Convert MBR to GPT without data loss with Gptgen

With this method, we will convert a hard disk MBR to GPT without losing data using gptgen. Gptgen is a tool to convert nondestructively partitioned hard drives, an MBR partition table to GUID Partition Table (GPT).

Important : If you want to convert your primary hard drive (the one where Windows is installed) GPT to enjoy the opportunities offered by the UEFI, I recommend very strongly to use the conversation with data loss (in using Diskpart ). It is preferable to start on a sound basis: GPT have a blank hard disk and then install the UEFI version of Windows 10, 8 or 7 properly. If you convert your primary hard disk to GPT , you risk severe system stability problems.

Download gptgen and unzip the archive to the root of your hard drive C:

In the command prompt (admin), enter the following commands:

  diskpart
list disk (note the disk number you want to convert)
exit
cd C: gptgen-1.1
gptgen.exe -w \. PhysicalDriveX (replace X with the disk number that you noted earlier)
