5 Reasons Why Every E-commerce Store Needs a Blog [Quick Guide]

If you want to attract traffic to your e-commerce website, it needs a blog.  It’s as simple as that.  Unless you’re running a large company like Amazon, you need to ensure your website appears at the top of the search engines when people search for the products that you sell.  Whilst implementing ecommerce solutions, using keywords in your product descriptions and performing off-page SEO can go some way towards increasing your website’s search rank, a blog can take things even further.  Still not convinced?  Keep reading for extra information on how a blog could help your e-commerce store.

1. You Can Become Known as an Industry Expert

Many people who shop online, don’t want to buy from a company they’ve never heard of.  Because of this, putting a face to your brand has never been more important.  By sharing blog posts with your e-commerce store visitors, you are showing people who you are and that you are knowledgeable in the products you are selling.  This helps to establish trust.  Whether you give your audience sneaky peaks into the manufacturing process, write how-to guides, perform interviews with members of your team, or even make videos illustrating how to use your products, you will be showing your customers that there are real people behind your brand – and that’s really important!

2. Increase Search Rankings with Product Reviews

We all know the first thing we do before making a purchase anywhere, is heading to Google and looking for online reviews. A huge advantage to starting a blog for an e-commerce site is simply being able to create high-value content for your audience that also references your existing products and services. A perfect example of this would be an article on “7 Ways to Clean Your Car for Under $20”, then among this list you could include any cleaning products your site might sell. Not only will this type of content rank well in the search results, it could do pretty well in social media also. No matter what you are selling, getting creative with your blog content is a great way to increase exposure and sales across the board.

3. You Can Address Problems

If your customer service department receives a lot of calls regarding your delivery times, how to use your products, or even whether you offer refunds, they’re likely dealing with a lot of calls on basic matters.  Whilst it is important to still have phone staff available, you may be able to decrease a lot of these calls if you address problems on your blog. This could easily be done by building out a resources or FAQ section on your blog. Another option would be individual posts for bigger events — such as the run-up to Christmas, when you may be experiencing delays with sending out products. Why not cover this on your blog?  One simple blog post explaining the delay and when customers can expect to receive their orders could help to relieve your customer service department of a lot of enquiries.

4. You Can Establish a Loyal Community

Most people who run blogs leave the comments section open so that their readers can comment and give their input on the blog post they have just read.  This helps to make your customers feel like their views are important. However, you can take this one step further by replying to your blog comments and encouraging a discussion.  You could also opt to enable Facebook comments on your blog.  This way, every time someone comments on a post whilst logged into their Facebook account, their Facebook friends will receive a notification.  This could end up leading to more customers.  The more often you respond to comments and encourage a discussion, the more chance you have of establishing a community and gaining repeat customers.

5. Reach New Audiences through Creative Writing

Another great reason to set up a blog for your e-commerce site  is because you can reach new audiences through the creative writing process. We all know that the only reason why people visit an e-commerce site in the first place is because they want to buy something. What if you could get a large amount of generic traffic to your site, then bring in a few random sales as well? This would be great! To get creative with your writing, while still providing value and increasing sales in the process, try to write content around hot topics, current events and trends within your industry. Focusing on trending topics on social media and hashtags are two great methods for reaching new audiences without the need to spend money on advertising. Throw in some entertainment and celebrity names and you might just find your next blog content going viral!

So then, even if we discount the SEO benefits that your e-commerce store will gain from having a blog in place, there are three other great reasons to create one.  If your e-commerce store doesn’t have a blog, you’re missing out!
